A LESSON IN KNOWING YOURSELF

A LESSON IN KNOWING YOURSELF

If you and I meet for the first time and I request you to tell me something about yourself, you will probably start with telling me your name. What you reveal thereafter will probably depend on the context in which we are meeting. You could be telling me your educational qualifications, your professional expertise, age, father’s name, the name of the town that you come from, your work experience and the like. Well, these are all parts of your identity as it is now. Some of these have been acquired by you while some others like your name, family background and father’s name etc. have been given to you by others.

YOUR IDENTITY CHANGES WITH TIME

Some parts of your identity change with time. While you were studying medicine or architecture, you were a student and that was your identity. You may now already be a doctor or an architect and that is your identity now. Possibly, you were a religious person earlier but are no longer so. Your identity, in this case also, has changed with time.

IDENTITIES BECOME ATTACHMENTS AND CREATE BONDING

As time goes by, your identities take the form of your attachments. You establish an emotional bond with each of your identities. And when it’s time to let go, you find yourself at cross-roads. Banking on your immense wisdom, you are soon able to break all those bonds and you suddenly realize that actually, you were none of those. Then what exactly is your identity?

WHAT EXACTLY IS YOUR IDENTITY?

The holy scriptures say, and the elders within the family reiterate, that you are the Divine Light personified. When this Divine Light falls on different segments of your identity, they shine bright. Without this light falling on them, they would not even be visible to you and others. The bright light makes them all shine. The Divine Light is way beyond your different identities or the various parts of your identity.

YOU CAN SAY THAT YOU ARE AN INDIVIDUAL SOUL

Though you are an individual soul, the light in that soul is Divine. But for this Divine Light within, even your soul doesn’t exist. There is no room for even your ego. Then who are you?

WHO ARE YOU?

The answer is that You are Him. You don’t actually exist. This is all an illusion. When you realize that you do not exist, then only you get to know as to who exists. The truth is then revealed to you. When you know the source of your origin, then and then only, you get to know what birth and death really are.
